Less successful on the International stage than their West German counterparts, DDR (East Germany) still boast some recognisable names. Ulf Kirsten, Matthias Sammer, Andreas Thom, Thomas Doll (all players who also played for the re-unified Germany team, 1990 onwards). This cool Retro replica kit is from circa 1967 and the time of the European Championship qualifiers (tournament staged in Italy '68 and featuring just 4 teams). The DDR team from this era featured the likes of Herbert Pankau and captain Dieter Erler (named GDR player of the year in '67). With Soviet interference affecting recreational activities of private clubs in East Germany, it wasn't until 1952 that DDR played their first game against Poland, dubbed a display of good will and taking place on 21 September 1952. DDR never qualified for the European Championships and only once for the World Cup (1974) held in neighbouring West Germany.
