Bass Weejuns: 90 Years of The Original Penny Loafer

2026 marks the 90th anniversary of the iconic G.H. Bass Weejuns loafer. First introduced in 1936, Bass Weejuns have spent nine decades at the heart of classic American Ivy League style, as well as becoming an essential part of British Mod fashion in the 1960s. Two limited edition 90th Anniversary Penny Loafers have been created to celebrate, each featuring a commemorative gold anniversary coin in a nod to the original function of a 'Penny' loafer.     The fourth John Smedley (JB Marsden-Smedley) purchased the famous Lea Mills (Matlock, Derbyshire) freehold in 1894 from the well known Nightingale family. Indeed, a certain Florence Nightingale acted as one of the signatories on the contract. In fact, Florence Nightingale lived at Lea Hurst and her earliest experiences of caring for the sick and poor came from the local villages around her… including around the John Smedley Factory.
