What is a Duffle Coat?
The traditional Duffle Coat was made and named after 'Duffel', a course and thick woolen fabric which was hard-wearing, stiff and strong. Typical and traditional Duffle Coats feature the following:
- A mid thigh to knee length coat
- Straight, sometimes oversized fit
- Hooded with press stud adjusters
- Toggle fastenings with rope or leather ties
- Thick, stiff fabric, usually boiled wool in modern coats
- Check-back fabric (featuring a check lining)
- Deep patch pockets to the front
- Stormguard patches to shoulders (usually stitched down)
- Button fasten stormguard to collar/chin.
Duffle coats were adopted by the British Navy in the 1890s, where it was originally called the 'Convoy Coat'. A warm and sturdy coat, it was ideal cold weather outerwear and the toggle fastens meant it was easier to fasten and unfasten with gloved hands as opposed to button fasten coats. During World War One, the Navy issued a camel coloured Duffle Coat as part of it's uniform and this has become the enduring Duffle Coat look and tradtional colour. During World War Two, a slightly modified version of the Duffle Coat became known as the 'Monty', after Field Marshal Montgomery who was frequently seen wearing a Duffle Coat.
Who are Gloverall?
Gloverall's roots can be traced back to 1954. After the end of World War II, wholesalers, H&F Morris started selling surplus military Duffle Coats which - being available to civilians for the first time - were an instant hit. This success led to the birth of the Gloverall company, based in Northampton, England, who began making and manufactoring their own Gloverall Duffle Coats, with one of the original designs being 'The Monty' Duffle Coat. The Gloverall Monty is named after Field Marshal Montgomery, a famous duffle coat wearer. You can also find the women's Monty in our Gloverall women's duffle coat range.
As Gloverall grew, they diversified into more mens outerwear, including Gloverall car coats, peacoats and trench coats.
