Bomber Jackets
Bomber Jackets, as we’ve come to know them, were originally known as flight jackets and were established during in 1917 by the US Army Aviation Clothing Board to keep pilots warm during flight in the First World War. Significant developments occurred between the wars, particularly with the launch of the leather US Army Type A-1 in 1927 which incorporated the now famous knit waistband and cuffs creating the classic flattering bomber fit, high on the waistline.
Various further developments occur before we get to the upgraded MA-1 in 1949 with its zip closure and baseball style collar. It is this design that made the leap between military wear and youth fashion, with Marlon Brando sporting this timeless silhouette in “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 1951.
Still manufactured to this day by Alpha Industries, and available at Atom Retro, the MA-1 is the archetypal bomber jacket, incorporating the blouson fit, knitted trims, weather resistant shell and iconic orange lining.
The general style attributes of the modern bomber jacket are a cropped length, looser arms and shoulders, and ribbed baseball collar, waistband and cuffed sleeves. Combining effortlessly with blue denim for a timeless Americana style, the bomber is available in a variety of colours and materials.
As well as a strong selection of bomber jackets from Alpha Industries, we have some great interpretations of that iconic style from Wrangler, Lyle & Scott and Gabicci Vintage.
