Sergio Tacchini and the Golden Age of Tennis.
Sergio Tacchini means lots of things to lots of people. Some people will think of the 1980s Casuals and Football Terrace Culture, some people will think of the Retro Style of The 90s Indie Britpop era, whilst others will take the brands origins in the world of Tennis as a cue for wearing the brand.
The man, Sergio Tacchini knew a fair bit about tennis, being that he was three times Italian Champion (one in singles and two in doubles), making his professional debut in 1955 before retiring in 1968. He actually founded the Sergio Tacchini clothing brand (originally called Sandys S.p.A.) whilst he still playing tennis in 1966.
Fast forward a few years to the 1970s and 1980s, for many the golden age of tennis. The legends that graced the game during this period are almost too many to mention… In fact we are only going to mention the Sergio Tacchini sponsored names! In a period of where Sergio Tacchini and Fila dominated tennis sponsorship, the list of names sporting the Tacchini brand were a Who’s Who of tennis icons. Illie N?stase, Jimmy Connors, Mats Wilander, John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova and Pat Cash all donned the famous Sergio Tacchini ST monogram as the iconic Young Line silhouette became synonymous with the sport and the era.
More latterly tennis stars to have worn the Sergio Tacchini brand are Pete Sampras, Sergi Bruguera, Martina Hingis and Gabriela Sabatani.
Two other notable names who also wore the brand during their careers are Goran Ivaniševi? who famously won Wimbledon as a Wild Card entry in 2001 sporting his Sergio Tacchini threads when at that point he was only ranked world no. 125.
The other is Novak Djokovic who Sergio Tacchini sponsored when he won the Australian Open for the second time and Wimbledon in 2011.
The Sergio Tacchini brand is engrained in the fabric of tennis, becoming so synonymous with the sport that it’s legacy on the court will live forever. In a journey that started with its founder and ran right through the Golden Era of tennis with a rich roster of tennis icons wearing the name, Sergio Tacchini is still going strong.
