Paisley Print: A brief history of an iconic design.
The iconic paisley design has roots that stretch back to 11th Century Indian Kashmir and Persia. The pattern itself believed to be derived from the Zoroastrian symbol of a cypress tree, with the teardrop-shaped motif reminiscent of the trees budding shoots, combined with a floral spray, to represent life, eternity and interconnectedness. Initially know as “boteh” in Persian the design became associated with luxurious Kashmir shawls by the 16th Century, with increasing numbers entering Europe.
By the 18th Century the East India Company began importing these fine goat hair Kashmir shawls, each woven with love and skill, and they became to be highly sought after by European high society. These designs were highly expensive and remained the preserve of the wealthy until the the Industrial Revolution.
Keen to sell the paisley design via local traders to a larger market, production began in the United Kingdom, most notably in the town of Paisley, with the ancient design laying down firm Scottish roots. It was naturally during this period that the classic design was given the name we still use to this day. So now when you wrap yourself in paisley, you’re essentially wearing a cosy slice of Scottish history.
The swirling paisley motifs, with their ties to life and fertility, found a new home amongst Bohemian souls in the 60s. The Eastern design, mysticism, and swirling aesthetic naturally found favour during the Psychedelic era with The Beatles rocking the paisley look as well as anybody.
