Dr Martens

Express your inner rebel with women's Dr Martens boots and shoes! A retro classic, Dr Martens (‘Docs’ or 'DMs' as they are also know) never go out of fashion. Famous for the 1460 Dr Marten boot, the Dr Martens women's range also includes many other iconic styles such as the 1461 shoe, Jadon platform sole boots, Mary Jane and Polley T-Bar shoes, Leonore Chelsea boots and Voss and Blair sandals (available in Spring and Summer), as well as vegan versions of many popular styles. 

The Dr Martens story began in was founded in post-war Munich, Germany in 1945 with Dr Klaus Maertens, a 25 year old soldier. While recovering from a broken foot Maertens created a unique air-cushioned sole (rather than the traditional hard leather sole) to aid his recovery. Maertens made a prototype shoe and showed it to an old university friend and mechanical engineer, Dr. Herbert Funk. The two went into partnership, using disused military supplies they started producing their unique shoes. By 1947 they began formal production and within a decade had a booming business. 

Over in the UK, Bill Griggs, co-owner of the Griggs footwear company, a shoe manufacturer based in Northamptonshire with a reputation for sturdy, durable work boots, spotted an advert for the German air-cushioned soles. An exclusive license was acquired and a few key changes made, including an altered heel, a distinctive yellow welt stitch, a two tone grooved sole edge and a unique sole pattern. The boots were branded as ‘Airwair’ and came complete with a black and yellow heel loop featuring the brand name and the slogan “With Bouncing Soles” (based on Bill Grigg’s own handwriting). Taking its name from date of its inception, April 1st, 1960, the eight-holed 1460 Dr. Martens boot had arrived.
