    The fourth John Smedley (JB Marsden-Smedley) purchased the famous Lea Mills (Matlock, Derbyshire) freehold in 1894 from the well known Nightingale family. Indeed, a certain Florence Nightingale acted as one of the signatories on the contract. In fact, Florence Nightingale lived at Lea Hurst and her earliest experiences of caring for the sick and poor came from the local villages around her… including around the John Smedley Factory.
