From innovative takes on the classic Mod Desert Boots, to classic Nineties Britpop Indie style Trainers to a burgeoning repartee of fab Retro Espadrilles (Espadrille - what a fab word - I shall repeat this many times today), Original Penguin are fast out of the blocks and streets ahead on style. Icon of music and we think fashion too, guitar virtuoso, one time Smiths guitarist and all time legend, Johnny Marr (hope that covers all bases) posed a great quandary today on Twitter. Re-tweeted by our good selves and posted on facebook a short while later, the remark garnered a thoughtful response from Atom Retro followers: "Does the love of retro mean we love the past or are dissatisfied with things in the present ?" It's a sentiment that has oft played on the hearts and minds of Atom Retro personnel, and it seems many others too. There are many factors to consider in reaching a conclusion, but I guess there can never be a definitive answer as the old adage 'each to his own' suggests a multitude of differing opinions will be at play. Here, however is an insight from keen followers of fashion, or should I say Followers of Retro Clothing and fashion. Whether it be biased or fair comment, we'll let you judge for yourselves. "In terms of fashion, music and culture I was definitely born a generation too late. I love everything about the Fifties, Sixties and Seventies, even though I never lived through it, and I do think things like music and fashion were much better then than they are in the present. There is some okay stuff, but I don't think anyone would be able to argue that music and fashion are better now than they were in the Sixties. So they answer to the question is yes, both." Welcome to part 2 of the Atom Retro Guide to Mod Clothing. We left off last time having discussed the Teddy Boy Movement and it's demise in popularity towards the end of the Fifties - Paving the way for new subcultures to emerge and define a new generation. Part 2 will observe the late Fifties Beat Generation, the modernist movement, Beatnik culture and the dawning of a new era! Mod Clothing Guide Part 2 - I had a dream.... and that dream was Mod! Modernists, Beatniks and the Beat Generation! Firstly perhaps we should start by stating the obvious - that the 1960s is arguably the most talked about and most fondly remembered decade of recent times. A period of time that witnessed much cultural change and laid to rest many ghosts of shame that had preoccupied the Western world for far too long. It was an optimistic time, particularly for the worlds youth - an exciting time for music, film, fashion and indeed for opportunity.
